Every time he did this there were voices inside his head telling him to leave, warning him off it. Sometimes they were his own and sometimes they sounded like Donna's mother, which was usually when he actually listened to them. But underneath it all was also Wilfred's voice, echoing the same sentiments the Doctor shared, even though he knew better.
It wasn't fair. It wasn't fair to him to have lost a friend so dear to him like this. To have had to say goodbye to her and know that all he remembered, all they had shared, from great adventures to silly nights spent talking about nothing and everything didn't exist anymore, had never happened, not to her. But more than that it wasn't fair to her. He knew her, he knew her better than anyone and he knew that she had only just finally seen herself the way she was, absolutely brilliant. But now she was back with the insecurities that kept her small and it didn't matter that the universe would have been lost without her and that the Ood still sang her name.
So he popped in every now and then. Usually just to see her from far away. To make sure she seemed happy. He'd seen her new house, bought with the money from the lottery. He'd learned what spots she frequented. And then eventually he'd started to hang about at the coffee shop she frequented, only to always hide when she actually came in. But this time... Maybe he'd seen her too late or maybe he just hadn't wanted to hide anymore. This time he stayed seated where he was and finally even glanced up, just to see if maybe she'd recognize him. A short talk couldn't hurt, could it? Just to check up on her.
