"I'm just tired of losing people I care about to stupid decisions, John." Jack watched John as he stood, taking special note of how much he was using the wall. He hoped it was just pain and not some kind of nerve damage. "I've lost too many people over the years, and I'm done with it. Especially when it could have been prevented. I've made stupid decisions, and I've paid for them. That's the thing about living forever: You have plenty of time to learn from your mistakes."

Jack too got to his feet, not moving from the glass and instead leaning on it to watch John. "I like this life, too. I've had it a lot longer than I had the old one. So trust me, I know what I'm in for here." He let his eyes drift down to John's injured leg. "How bad is it? I could get you something for it if you want. At least to take the edge off."
